2 People Arrested Over 7Million Fraud in Ado Ekiti
Two officials of Ekiti State Central Medical Store, Ado-Ekiti, are currently cooling their heels in the custody of the State Police Command over fraud running into N7 million.
The state governor, Mr Ayo Fayose, yesterday handed over the culprits, Mrs Cecilia Akinyele, a grade level 9 officer and Mr Bello Olajide, a grade level 10 officer to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Etop John James, for a thorough investigation of the matter.
An audit of the finances of the agency early in the year showed that over N7 million was missing from the account of the agency.
Mrs Akinleye, a cashier in the agency, who is the prime suspect in the matter, had accused Olajide, the accountant, of collecting the money from her on various dates starting from April this year.
According to her, before she started giving out the money to Olajide, a few days after her posting as the cashier, she informed a fellow worker, Mrs Adekemi Ojuawo, that her boss asked her to lend him the agency’s money in her care.
“Mrs Ojuawo warned me against doing this, but because he is my boss, when he came to ask that I loan him the money again, I obliged him. I know this is against civil service rule.
“The first money he took from me was N100,000, that was on April 16, 2015. He went ahead to borrow from the government money 36 times. The least he took was N50,000 and the highest was N300,000,” she alleged.
In his defence, Olajide denied ever taking any money from the woman, saying some of the dates listed by Akinleye, such as May 29, 2015, were public holidays.
