Afe Babalola Warns President, Governors Against Arbitrary Sack Of VCs And Governing Councils Of Universities

Governors and The President in Nigeria who are usually Visitors to Nigerian Universities have been told that they have no constitutional powers to sack a Vice Chancellor without referring the case to the Governing Council of such university.

They have also been told that it would be improper to appoint Chairmen of Governing Councils of universities on political basis.

The founder, Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola made the declaration at the 21st Convocation Lecture of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti on Thursday inside the Main Auditorium of the institution.

Aare Afe Babalola in his 54-page lecture titled “University Administration: The role of Stakeholders” reminded Visitors to universities that the process of appointing Vice Chancellors was through the Governing Councils of universities and that Visitors should always permit Governing Councils to handle the discipline or otherwise of Vice Chancellors.

According to him, the procedure for the appointment and removal of Vice Chancellors should be in accordance with the university Acts. He wondered why some visitors to Nigerian University would jump over the Governing Council to sack Vice Chancellors when Governing Councils were on ground.

Aare Afe Babalola therefore urged stakeholders in the university education sector to make sure that such actions should not be encouraged.

The EKSU Convocation guest lecturer strongly recommended that Pro-Chancellors should not be appointed based on political basis or through political parties. He was of the opinion that Pro-Chancellors should not see universities as an avenue for making money but an avenue to make positive contributions to the development of education.

The founder of ABUAD, cited several constitutional provisions and university Acts as well as court rulings to back up his argument.

On Vice Chancellors, Aare Afe Babalola told Vice Chancellors to familiarize themselves with the laws of the university and do their job without fear of favour.

The dignitaries at the occasion included traditional rulers, stakeholders from the education industry, Vice Chancellors of many universities as well as members of the public.
