NDLEA to Begin Counselling of Drug Addicts in Ekiti State
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ekiti State Command on Thursday said the agency would intensify efforts in counselling and rehabilitating drug addicts in the state.
The State Commander of the Agency, Mr Suleiman Jadi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Ado-Ekiti
He said that the Department of Drug Demand Reduction Unit had been set up to counsel and rehabilitate any addict.
He listed the harmful drugs that youths and adults consume to include cocaine, cannabis, tramadol among other harmful drugs, saying “few people are into cocaine peddling’’.
Jadi said that adequate mechanism and experts on drugs intake were available to attend to cases of abuse of drugs by teenagers and adults.
“Aside cannabis and cocaine, someone can be addicted to paracetamol, novalgin, especially when they are not prescribed by physician for a particular illness.
“Most parents are aware that their sons and daughters are drug addicts, but they are afraid to take them to the hospital, so that their child will not be stigmatised.
“I advise them to bring them to our office and we will counsel and educate them against the danger inherent in drugs abuse.
“We will not arrest anyone that are referred to our office for counseling and rehabilitation.
“But if the condition is severe, I will transfer the person to a Psychiatric hospital in Abeokuta for proper treatment,” he said.
The NDLEA boss said that officers of the agency were working tirelessly to ensure that drug peddlers and cannabis farmers were arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
He charged residents in Ekiti State not to hesitate to inform the agency of any hideout of drug peddlers.
